Season of Snakes - Rain is the cue

Wolf snake

This monsoon, it has been raining cats and dogs and also few snakes at my place. It is amazing to see these cryptic creatures coming out of their hiding places all of a sudden with monsoon showers. As if they received some kind of message from above to come out. Few months ago, it was difficult to find even a single snake in the surrounding area even with intentional intense surveying. But now, I come across one snake almost daily. A good reason for me to like MONSOON.

The rainy season is the ideal time for these beautiful slithering reptiles to mate and forage. There are ample amount of food available with frogs and toads coming out to breed. Even though sometimes, rainwater floods their shelters like rodent burrows and abandoned termite mounds, they keep away from humans as much as possible. But  a few somehow find their way inside our warm and dry human houses, which is nothing but a proof that we have encroached upon their habitat. And also an indicator of few of them to be highly opportunistic in their habits.

Now among the snakes encountered, the frequency of non-venomous snakes was impressively higher than their venomous counterparts, viz. six species of non-venomous snakes (banded racer, striped keelback, checkered keelback, kukri snake, wolf snake, rat snake) to a single venomous snake (Krait). This gives the assurance of many snake bites to be non-lethal.
